waiting (not so) patiently

PJ spends much of the day attempting to get into my brother’s bedroom. He’s not allowed in because he chews on guitar amp chords and knocks stuff off the desk and generally makes a nuisance of himself. But that doesn’t stop him from trying.

(apologies for the sporadic posting: it’s mid-winter, in New England, and the seasonal blues can be hard to shake. Luckily, pets can be some of the very best therapy.)

Our Mama Cat’s randomly assigned birth date was yesterday, putting her (at our best guess) around five years old. She is one sweet and goofy little girl, and we love her dearly.

Kh. Michelle asks:
Do you know how to train a cat to know its name and come when called? My friend just got a shelter cat, wants to change her name (which she does not respond to), and give her a new name. Any ideas? I thought you had mentioned about this, but I am not sure.
I have written in the past about training cats to come when called, but never specifically addressed how to come when called by name. Truth be told, while all of our cats do know their own names, I couldn’t exactly tell you how we did it.
My not-so-expert advice? Talk to the cat. Constantly. Call them by name at mealtimes, when you’re snuggling together, and when they’re running around playing. Keep up the chatter and pepper it with the liberal use of their name. When they’re otherwise occupied, say their name in a happy tone until you get their attention, then reward them. After they’ve started turning their head consistently, make them come to *you* for the reward. You’ll have to use your best judgment and not dole out a reward every time, but often enough that the cat associates their name with coming to you for a good thing, whether it’s a snack or a toy or a chin scratch.
